Tailgating Plans

April 9, 2010

The day is almost here that professional soccer returns to Philadelphia after many decades of absence. The date has been set, the tickets have been bought, and now all remains are the final preparations for matchday.

Half the fun of experiencing a weekend match is the tailgating and we look to kick things off right this Saturday. Two of our members, Eric and Mark, or “The Chefs” as many of you have been calling them, have volunteered their time and talents to cater our tailgate. Don’t quote me, but last I heard they were planning on some pulled pork and jerk chicken. The price will be $10 per person, which is a great deal considering that you don’t have to do any shopping, preparing, transporting or cooking. Please pay with cash (my credit card machine is broken). Of course, you are encouraged to bring whatever else you would like to round your meal out. Get to the tailgate early since we’ll be preparing enough to feed around 35 or so. This is a BYOB event during which beer swapping will be encouraged. If you have any tailgating games or soccer balls please bring them and don’t forget to bring chairs.

We will assemble in Lot K where parking should cost between $10 to $15. Here is the timeline:

2:30 p.m. – Arrive in lot K, begin setup

2:34 p.m. – Eat, drink, be merry

5:15 p.m. – March to the match (remember we’re at Lincoln Financial Field)

6:00 p.m. – Kickoff

8:00 p.m. – Celebrate our first victory

Wear your Tammany Saints shirt if you have one, otherwise try to wear navy, white, gold, or any combination thereof. If enough people show interest, we can put in a second order for Tammany Saints shirts to be delivered by the next game. If you think you’ll want one have $20 ready to place an order.

Though we will provide passionate support to the Union, please let that not be to the detriment of our reputation and to the spirit of what the Tammany Saints stand for – family, friends, food, drink and fun all in the name of soccer. In other words, let’s show respect to the many DC United fans that will be our guests this weekend. Good natured trash talk is part of the fun of live matches, let’s just not go over the line.

On a side note, we got a mention in a well-written, local and frequently updated soccer blog called the Philly Soccer Page. It’s just a one liner but this same site interviewed me for a piece about the Tammany Saints which should be up in the near future. Check back often. Click here for the article and comment on the site to show your support.

Check us out on Facebook while you’re at it. Just type “Tammany Saints” in the search bar and add yourself as a fan. All club event photos will be uploaded here so check back after the weekend.

Anybody out there reading this who is not a member of Tammany Saints, please stop by Lot K at the Linc to say hello.

In just a few short months we as the Tammany Saints have gone from a simple idea and a logo scribbled in pencil to a proper supporters club with 30+ members, all before a ball has even been kicked in Philly. I wait in eager anticipation for all the good times we will share this season.
